Huanggang Normal University (HGNU) is a four-year undergraduate university with a wide range of disciplines, offering both teacher training programs and non-teacher training programs. With Dongpo Red Cliff lying to the north and the Yangtze River to the south, HGNU is regarded as the No.1 institute of higher education in Huanggang, a city with a population of 7.3 million.
HGNU consists of three campuses: the Mingzhu Campus, the Yinpan Campus, and the Nanhu Campus, and covers a total area of 85.8 hectares including 500,000 square meters of building space. Admission to HGNU is available to applicants from 27 provinces, municipalities directly under the Central Government, and autonomous regions all over the country. The university now has 15 schools, over 15,000 full-time students and 1,176 staff members,among whom, 108 are professors, 312 are associate professors, and 180 are holders of a Doctoral Degree. HGNU has 30 experts with honors at various levels. Over the past century, HGNU has developed into a multi-disciplinary institute of higher education covering eight fields of different specialities. The eight fields are Letters, Science, Engineering, Law, Economics, Administration, Pedagogy, and Agriculture. At present, HGNU has 43 four-year degree specialities and 13 three-year diploma specialities which cover eight disciplines: Letters, Science, Engineering, Law, Economics, Administration, Pedagogy, and Agriculture. Among those specialities, there are 20 in pedagogy, 10 in engineering, and 10 in the arts. Double bachelor degrees can be conferred in 19 specialities.
In recent years, HGNU has been successively awarded numerous recognitions, including:"National-Level Model School in Popularizing Mandarin and Standardized Chinese Characters","National Green School","National Model School of Trade Unions", "Advanced University of Hubei Province in Student Affairs Administration","Advanced Group of Hubei Province in Graduates' Employment","Safe Campus of Hubei Province", as well as various others.
In the past five years, HGNU has engaged in, and undertaken, 24 national-level projects, 16 ministry-level projects, and 37 provincial-level projects. In 2010, ten million RMB was spent introducing and executing projects. 174 monographs and textbooks, and 5,546 academic essays have been published. Among the published essays, over 150 have been quoted and reprinted, and 343 have been included in SCI, EI, and ISTP. With its achievements in scientific research, HGNU has attained one national-level award, 18 provincial and ministry-level awards, and has acquired patents on 11 inventions. There are three provincial-level research bases of humane studies and social sciences, and one key laboratory.
At present, all the staff members of the university, guided by the 12th Five-Year Plan, which was launched and approved at the 1st Congress of CCP Representatives of HGNU, are striving to develop HGNU into a first-class provincial-level University with distinct features, outstanding advantages, and distinguished provincial-level importance and growing national-level influence.
HGNU has international exchanges with countries all over the world. It has established stable exchange and cooperation with more than 10 universities and institutes, including Ramapo College of New Jersey (America), Indiana State University (America), University of Newcastle (Australia), University of South Queensland (Australia), Northumbria University (Britain), National Academy of Arts (Republic of Moldova), Chung-Ang University (Korea), Auckland Institute of Studies (New Zealand), and Asia University (Japan). Also, HGNU has successively invited more than 100 foreign experts and scholars to teach and/or lecture. Accordingly, more than 100 teachers in HGNU have been sent abroad for further education, and academic visits and lectures. HGNU began to enroll overseas students in 2002. Since 2007, HGNU has carried out the project of World Famous Scientists Lecturing in Hubei Province 10 times.
